Iyengar yoga in action

Saturday 3 July 2021: 10.00 - 11.30

This General Level Online class is a fundraising event organised by the UK Iyengar Yoga community to support the charity Black Minds Matter! This class, taught by Zoë Reason, is just one of many offered during this week.

Its part of a national commitment to make the teaching of Iyengar Yoga in the UK inclusive and non discriminatory. We often talk about BKS Iyengar’s promotion of “Yoga for All” - and yet, looking round most yoga classes we see mostly white, middle class able bodied women. What do we need to do to make sure that the next generation of Iyengar Yoga teachers represent and reflect wider society more accurately?

This is a start - and in this short talk Roy Russell talks eloquently about why this is such an important thing for yoga practitioners:

Black Lives Matter and Yoga

In taking part in this class you are helping to challenge racism and all forms of discrimination within the Iyengar Yoga community

10.00 am - 11.30 am

Guru purnima

Saturday 24 July 2021

A gathering to celebrate the lineage in which we study yoga. The word guru is often taken to mean teacher - the root of “gu” means darkness, “ru” means light. So when we say “guru” we are honoring those who shed light on darkness. Purnima refers to the full moon - which in July 2021 falls on Saturday 24th.
